Our Design Stories
A vision for unmatched luxury led to Burj Al Arab — shaped like a sail, it became an architectural icon.
“It all started with the story of this remarkable city-Abu Dhabi.
One morning, sometime in 1761, Sheikh Dijabi was leading a group of hunters. Mounted on horses and camels, they were chasing a gazelle. As they chased the graceful animal, it disappeared from sight, amidst a dense coastal fog. Later, when the fog cleared, the animal was spotted. It had crossed a shallow sea between the mainland and an island, hundreds of meters from the shore. When Sheikh Dijabi saw it, the gazelle was drinking water from a spring. The fresh water near the seashore was a surprise to Sheikh Dijabi, but his intuition immediately grasped that this place would be the future destiny of his people, so a settlement was established there. He called the new settlement 'Abu Dhabi', which word by word translates as 'Father of the Gazelle.'
